Fabulous Travel Art Prints

Art Deco travel posters, mostly from the 1920s and 1930s, lean on geometry: chevrons, stepped and streamlined forms, symmetrical layouts, flat blocks of saturated color and italic type suggesting speed, all promoting ocean liners, express trains and glamorous resorts. Mid-century posters, roughly late 1940s through the 1960s and often for airlines, are looser and more illustrative, with painterly or collage-style brushwork, simplified sketchy figures, playful hand-lettering and bright, sunny palettes. In short, Deco sells Machine Age luxury; mid-century sells cheerful, accessible leisure. For decorating, Deco reads formal and graphic, mid-century reads warmer and more relaxed.

WPA national park posters are a group of 14 hand-silkscreened designs produced between 1938 and 1941 by artists employed through the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, promoting parks such as Yellowstone, Yosemite and Grand Canyon. They look different from European travel posters because silkscreen printing favored flat planes of limited color, hard-edged shapes and blocky sans-serif type, and the goal was civic pride in public land rather than selling railway or ocean liner tickets. European lithographed posters often leaned on softer gradients, glamour and fashionable figures. That bold graphic style reads well in dens, hallways and outdoor-themed rooms.

Black is the safest all-around pick: a slim black frame sharpens the bold outlines and saturated color that define vintage travel poster design, and it reads crisp in modern, minimalist or darker rooms. Natural oak is the warmer choice, flattering faded, sun-bleached palettes and suiting Scandinavian, coastal and mid-century spaces. White works best on pale walls and in airy rooms where you want the art to stay light. Keep profiles plain rather than ornate, and stick to one frame color across a gallery wall. Framed prints arrive as one finished piece, ready to hang.

Use the two-thirds rule: your print (or group of prints) should span roughly two-thirds the width of your sofa. For a standard UK three-seater (around 200cm wide), a single large travel art print at 70x100cm makes a confident statement, or try a pair of 50x70cm destination prints hung 5-8cm apart for a gallery feel. Go big here. A single small frame floating above a sofa always looks like an afterthought.

Start with one anchor piece (your largest print, ideally 50x70cm or bigger) and build outward. Stick to a single frame finish across all prints so it reads as a curated collection rather than a mismatched scrapbook. Lay everything out on the floor first, keep spacing consistent at 5-7cm between frames, and hang the centre of the grouping at eye level (roughly 150cm from the floor).
