Pattern art is built on repetition: a motif such as a shape, line, color or organic form repeated in a recognizable arrangement like a grid, sequence or symmetry, creating rhythm across the surface. Abstract art, by contrast, does not need repetition at all; it can be a single gesture, wash or non-representational composition. Geometric art overlaps with both, using circles, polygons, stars and grids, and it becomes pattern art only when those shapes repeat. In practice, expect wallpaper-like regularity from pattern prints and freer, one-off compositions from abstracts.

How do I choose the right pattern scale for a wall art print so it doesn't look busy?

Match the motif size to the wall and the viewing distance: a tight, small repeat seen from across a room tends to blur into texture or read as fussy, while a large motif with generous negative space stays calm and legible. For a print above a sofa or bed, aim for roughly two thirds of the furniture width, then step back and check whether individual motifs are still readable. Keep one pattern dominant and let nearby textiles stay solid or textured so nothing competes. Tape paper the size of the print to the wall before you commit.
