Most vintage botanical wall art traces back to a small group of Renaissance-through-Victorian names. Pierre-Joseph Redoute, court flower painter to Marie Antoinette and Empress Josephine, supplies the famous rose and lily plates; Maria Sibylla Merian pairs plants with insects and their life cycles; Basilius Besler's early 17th-century garden engravings give the bold, herbal-style specimens; and Curtis's Botanical Magazine, launched in 1787, plus its longtime artist Walter Hood Fitch, produced thousands of hand-colored plates.
