Picking art for a child's room

Quick answers on hanging height, framing choices, growing-up-proof subjects and how prints arrive

What size prints work best for a kids room?

For most children's bedrooms, a single 50x70cm framed print above the bed or chest of drawers is the sweet spot. It's big enough to anchor the wall without overwhelming the room. If you're decorating a nursery, go slightly smaller (30x40cm or 40x50cm) and hang it at adult eye level so it reads as decor rather than a distraction at cot height. For a playroom with more wall space, a 70x100cm statement print or a set of two or three smaller prints in a row works brilliantly. The 2/3 rule is worth knowing here: your art should span roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it, so measure your kid's bed or bookcase first.

Should I buy framed or unframed art prints for a children's bedroom?

Framed, every time. Kids rooms take a beating, and an unframed print pinned to the wall will curl, tear, or fade within months. Our framed kids room art prints arrive ready to hang with solid wood frames and UV-protective acrylic glazing, so the colours stay vivid even in a sun-drenched south-facing bedroom. The acrylic is also shatter-resistant, which matters more in a five-year-old's room than you'd think. If you're on a tighter budget, our unframed prints are museum-grade giclée on thick matte paper and hold up well in a clip frame, but honestly the framed option saves you the hassle and looks significantly better.

How do I pick wall art that won't look babyish in a couple of years?

Skip the cartoon characters. The children's bedroom wall art that ages best tends to be illustrative without being infantile: think animals, nature scenes, maps, or bold abstract colour. A beautifully printed jungle scene or a set of botanical art prints will suit a toddler's room and still look great when they're eight. We'd suggest choosing art with a colour palette that ties into the room's bedding or rug rather than a specific theme they'll outgrow. That way you can update soft furnishings cheaply while the prints stay on the wall for years.

How should I arrange multiple prints on a playroom wall?

For a playroom, a horizontal row of three matching-sized prints (we like 30x40cm framed) hung at the same height is clean and playful without looking chaotic. Keep 5 to 8cm between each frame. Hang the centre of the grouping at about 145cm from the floor so it works for both adults and older kids. If you want a gallery wall, stick to one frame colour (white or natural wood works best in playrooms) and keep the subject matter loosely connected, like all animals or all landscapes, so it feels curated rather than random. Avoid going too high or too spread out; a tight cluster always reads better than prints scattered across a big wall.

How big should nursery wall art be?

For a nursery, we recommend a single 40x50cm or 50x70cm framed print as your main piece. Anything larger can dominate a small nursery, and anything smaller tends to look lost above a changing table or cot. If you have a longer wall, a pair of 30x40cm art prints for nursery spaces hung side by side with about 6cm between them looks lovely and gives you room to play with complementary designs. Hang the centre of the art about 150cm from the floor. It'll be above your baby's eyeline, but nursery art is really for you during those 3am feeds, so put it where you'll enjoy looking at it.
