What makes an artwork read as a "playful illustration" rather than just colorful abstract art?
Playful illustration reads as illustration because you can still recognize what is drawn. It keeps a visible drawing hand: outlines or sketchy line work, simplified flat shapes, exaggerated or slightly off proportions, and a recognizable subject such as a creature, figure, plant or scene that suggests a small story or joke. Purely abstract art drops that subject and lets color, shape and texture carry mood alone. Bright color helps, but tone and drawn form decide it. When choosing prints, look for that friendly, lighthearted, storybook feel over open-ended shapes.
How do you style playful illustrated art in a grown-up living room without it looking childish?
Treat the illustration as the room's one moment of humor and let everything around it stay adult.
