Why did Van Gogh use so much yellow, and which of his works are famous for it?

New synthetic pigments made it possible: he worked with three shades of chrome yellow, from pale lemon to a deep yellow-orange, layered thickly. Chrome yellow darkens with light exposure, so those paintings were once even more brilliant.
