I Googled the Colors I Wanted and Found my Perfect Print

I just moved from a three-bedroom, two story house to a two bedroom ground floor apartment. This is the start of my new life and I want new things in my new place. I stumbled across Fab by Googling, "Print, gold, teal, brown" and they popped up. I found the perfect picture in the perfect orientation with the perfect frame. My anal-retentive brother came over and hung it for me--Perfectly level! It looks perfect. I'm already eyeballing another print for my bedroom that has yet to be decorated. I'll definitely buy from them again.

Art Nouveau prints: your questions

What makes Alphonse Mucha's Art Nouveau style so recognizable?

Alphonse Mucha's style is recognizable for a few signature moves: a tall, narrow composition built around a graceful female figure, a decorative circle or halo behind her head borrowed from Byzantine icons and mosaics, and long sinuous lines that turn hair, drapery and vines into flowing ornament. His color choices set him apart too, favoring soft pastels, muted golds, sage greens and warm pinks instead of the loud poster palettes of 1890s Paris. Ornate borders, floral symbolism and hand-drawn lettering that curves with the image complete the look, which reads as calm, elegant and unmistakably Art Nouveau. Why do Art Nouveau prints look like vintage advertising posters?

Because much of the style was born in advertising. Art Nouveau peaked in 1890s Paris just as color lithography made large, cheaply printed posters possible, and an 1881 French law opened city walls to bill posting, turning boulevards into open-air galleries. Artists such as Jules Cheret, Toulouse-Lautrec and Alphonse Mucha designed ads for theaters, champagne, cigarette papers and biscuits, so the visual language of flat color, sinuous outlines, decorative borders, ornamental lettering and an idealized female figure is essentially poster design. Modern prints in that style inherit those commercial conventions. You may also like our Vintage Art Prints.

How do Mucha prints differ from Klimt prints?

Mucha prints reproduce commercial color lithographs, so they read as graphic posters: crisp outlines, flowing hair and drapery, halo-like arches, floral borders and softer, muted palettes built around an elegant central female figure. Klimt prints reproduce oil paintings from his gilded Vienna Secession period, so they look painterly and symbolist, with shimmering gold tones, mosaic-inspired geometry, dense ornament and intimate, emotionally charged subjects. For styling, Mucha-style imagery suits airy, romantic rooms and grid gallery walls, while Klimt-style imagery works as a single large statement piece over a sofa or bed, where its gold can echo warm metallic accents.

When was the Art Nouveau period, and how long did the style last?

Art Nouveau flourished from roughly 1890 to 1910, fading around the start of World War I in 1914, so the style's main run lasted about two decades. It peaked at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, where its sinuous, nature-inspired lines reached an international audience. The 1920s belong to Art Deco, a later movement built on bold geometry and sleek angles, which is why the two eras are often mixed up. Art Nouveau also went by other names, including Jugendstil in Germany, Secession style in Austria, and Modernismo in Spain. For a related option, explore our Art Deco Art Prints.

How do Art Nouveau prints look framed and on a wall?

Honestly, Art Nouveau artwork is one of the styles that benefits most from proper framing, and it's where a lot of people get burned by cheap options that warp or cheapen the look. Our Art Nouveau framed prints arrive ready to hang with solid wood frames and UV-protective acrylic glazing, so those rich, flowing details and muted botanical tones hold up beautifully over time. A 50x70cm framed print in our natural oak frame above a sideboard or mantlepiece is the sweet spot for most rooms. Many of our customers say these prints look even better in person than on screen, especially because the thick matte paper brings out depth in those intricate linework details without any glare.

Which Art Nouveau prints work best in a living room?

For a living room, go for something with warm golds, terracotta, or deep greens, those tones play beautifully against neutral walls and natural materials like wood or linen furniture. A large Art Nouveau wall art piece (we'd say 70x100cm) centred above a sofa makes a genuine statement without overwhelming the space. Botanical or figural designs in the Mucha tradition are a reliable choice if your room already leans warm and layered. If your living room skews more minimal and cool-toned, look for Art Nouveau prints with soft blues and muted line work instead.

What's the difference between Art Nouveau and Art Deco prints?

Art Nouveau is organic, curving, and nature-obsessed, think flowing hair, twisting vines, and asymmetric compositions from the 1890s to about 1910. Art Deco came after (the 1920s and 30s) and is all sharp geometry, metallic tones, and bold symmetry. On a wall, Art Nouveau prints feel warmer, more romantic, and pair naturally with earthy or vintage-inspired interiors. Art Deco prints lean sleeker and more glamorous. If you're drawn to whiplash curves and botanical detail rather than zigzags and gold leaf, you're firmly in Art Nouveau territory.

Can I mix Art Nouveau style prints with modern or minimalist decor?

Absolutely, and it's actually one of the best ways to use them. A single large Art Nouveau print on an otherwise clean, white wall creates a focal point with real character. The key is restraint: pick one hero piece rather than clustering several, and let the ornamental detail in the print do the heavy lifting against your pared-back furniture. A black frame helps bridge the gap between the vintage style of the artwork and a contemporary room. We see this combination constantly in Scandi-inspired spaces where people want warmth without clutter.

What are the main characteristics of Art Nouveau design?

Five hallmarks define the style: sinuous, whiplash curves inspired by natural forms; flattened perspective borrowed from Japanese woodblock prints; elaborate botanical and floral motifs; idealised female figures (especially in poster art); and rich, earthy colour palettes of gold, olive, amber, and dusty rose. These characteristics mean Art Nouveau prints bring an almost tactile sense of movement to a wall. It's a style rooted in the idea that art should be part of everyday life, which makes it a natural fit for home interiors rather than just gallery walls.
