Who was Owen Jones?

Owen Jones (1809–1874) was a British architect and designer whose influence on Victorian decoration was profound. He is best remembered for The Grammar of Ornament, published in 1856, a sourcebook compiling patterns and color schemes drawn from cultures around the world. His flat, richly colored ornamental designs still shape how we think about pattern today, which is why they translate so well into decorative wall art.

What is The Grammar of Ornament?

The Grammar of Ornament is Owen Jones's 1856 design sourcebook, a compendium of colors and ornamental patterns gathered from many historical and cultural traditions. It remains in print more than 150 years later and is one of the most recognized reference works in decorative design. Its bold, geometric plates are a favorite source for pattern-led wall art because each page reads as a complete composition.

How do I style Victorian ornamental prints at home?

Pattern-heavy Victorian designs look best against calm, uncluttered walls, so try a warm white, soft clay or deep ink backdrop and let the artwork carry the color. A symmetrical pair or a tight grid of three suits the geometry of ornamental plates and reinforces their repeating rhythm. In busy rooms with patterned textiles, one larger piece usually works better than several small ones.

Should I choose a canvas print or a framed art print?

Canvas has a softer, more textural surface that suits relaxed and contemporary interiors, while a framed paper print gives crisper edges and a more formal, traditional finish that echoes the look of a historic design plate. A framed canvas arrives as one finished piece with no separate frame to fit and no assembly required. Shipping is free and returns are accepted within 99 days, so you can decide in the room.
