Which portrait art prints work best in a living room?

For a living room, we'd steer you toward modern portrait art prints with a slightly abstracted or painterly quality. They bring warmth and personality without feeling like you're hanging a family photo album above the sofa. A single large portrait print (60x80cm or bigger) centred above a standard sofa creates an instant focal point. Muted, earthy tones tend to ground a room, while bold colour portraits work brilliantly against neutral walls. Our framed portrait prints arrive ready to hang, so you can go from blank wall to finished room in about ten minutes.

How do I choose between abstract portrait prints and more realistic styles?

It depends on what the rest of the room is doing. If your space already has a lot of pattern and texture (think patterned cushions, a busy rug), a more minimal or black and white portrait print gives the eye somewhere to rest. If your room is fairly pared back, an abstract portrait print with expressive colour and brushwork becomes the thing that makes it feel alive. We think abstract portraits work especially well in bedrooms and hallways because they're intriguing without being confrontational.

How large should a portrait print be for above a bed or sofa?

The old rule of thumb is that your art should be roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. For a standard UK double bed (135cm wide), that means a 70x100cm portrait art print hits the sweet spot. Above a three-seater sofa, you could go with a single large portrait print at the same size, or a pair of smaller framed portraits (each around 40x50cm) hung with about 5cm between them. We offer framed prints up to 70x100cm, which is genuinely statement-sized and looks far more impactful than most people expect.

Do your portrait prints come properly framed and ready to hang?

Yes, and honestly this is the thing we're proudest of. Every framed portrait art print ships as one piece: the print is already fitted into a solid FSC-certified wood frame with UV-protective acrylic glazing and hanging fixtures attached. No assembly, no warping, no discovering the frame is flimsy MDF when it arrives. If you've been burned before by prints that arrive with the frame packed separately and never sit quite right, you'll notice the difference immediately. Our customers regularly tell us the framing quality is even better than they expected.

Is portrait or landscape orientation better for wall art?

Portrait orientation naturally draws the eye upward, which makes rooms feel taller and works beautifully on narrow walls, in hallways, and between windows. Landscape orientation is better for wide, horizontal spaces like the wall above a sofa or sideboard. If you have a tall blank wall that feels unfinished, a large portrait art print is almost always the right call because it fills the vertical space in a way landscape pieces can't. For gallery walls, mixing both orientations adds visual rhythm, but we'd recommend anchoring the arrangement with one larger portrait-oriented piece.
