How do I choose abstract art for my living room when I don't know where to start?

Start with your sofa. Look at the dominant colour in your cushions or throw, then pick an abstract art print that features that colour alongside one or two tones you don't already have in the room. This is far more reliable than trying to 'match everything.' For most living rooms, a single large abstract print (we'd recommend 70x100cm) hung centrally above the sofa creates an immediate focal point and makes the whole room feel intentional. If your space still feels unfinished after that, a smaller companion print on an adjacent wall ties things together without overcomplicating it.

What size abstract art works best above a living room sofa?

For a standard three-seater sofa (around 200cm wide), you want your art to cover roughly two-thirds of the sofa's width. That means a single 70x100cm print hits the sweet spot, or a set of two or three smaller prints spaced 5-8cm apart. Anything much smaller than half the sofa's width will look lost and actually make the wall feel emptier. Our framed prints go up to 100x70cm and arrive ready to hang, so you won't need to fuss with separate framing that might warp or not fit properly.

Is abstract wall art still in style for living rooms?

Abstract art isn't a trend, it's a category, so it doesn't go 'out of style' the way a specific pattern or colour palette does. What does shift is which styles of abstract feel current. Right now, textured and painterly abstracts with warm, earthy palettes feel very of-the-moment, while bold geometric abstracts suit more contemporary spaces. The real advantage of abstract art prints for your living room is longevity: because they're not tied to a specific subject, they tend to age well even as you swap out soft furnishings around them.

Should I go colourful or minimalist with abstract art in my living room?

It depends on what your room is already doing. If your living room is fairly neutral (grey sofa, white walls, wooden floors), a colourful abstract art print is your fastest route to a room that feels alive. Go for something with two or three saturated tones rather than a full rainbow. If your room already has a lot going on, say patterned curtains, a statement rug, or bold upholstery, a minimalist abstract in muted tones or monochrome will give the eye somewhere to rest. Either way, the art should be the thing that completes the room, not competes with it.

How should I hang abstract art in my living room so it looks right?

The centre of your print should sit at around 145cm from the floor, which is roughly average eye level. If you're hanging above a sofa, leave 15-20cm between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame so the art feels connected to the furniture rather than floating. For sets of two or three abstract prints, keep gaps consistent at 5-8cm. All of our framed abstract art prints arrive with fixtures already attached, so you just need a nail and a spirit level rather than a trip to the hardware store.
