What's the difference between abstract art and Abstract Expressionism?

Abstract art is the broad umbrella for any work that doesn't try to depict recognizable subjects, relying instead on color, shape, line and form. Abstract Expressionism is one specific chapter within it: new forms of abstract painting developed by American artists such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning. So every Abstract Expressionist piece is abstract, but plenty of abstract wall art sits outside that movement.

What are the two main styles of Abstract Expressionism?

The movement is usually split into two broad approaches. Gestural or action painting emphasizes energetic marks, drips and visible physical movement, associated with artists like Pollock and de Kooning. Color field painting is calmer and more meditative, built from large expanses of saturated color, as in Rothko's work. Knowing which side you respond to makes choosing a print much easier: gestural for drama, color field for atmosphere.
