The first I describe is the Matisse lemons

The first I describe is the Matisse lemons. I am in my 80s now and enjoy finding the right the things for my grandchildren. I love all the imaginative art that is now sent by email with text, without charge,by some dedicated people. So...your initiative must be very busy.

What does "al fresco" mean literally?

"Al fresco" comes from Italian and literally translates as "in the cool" or "in the cool air." In English it has come to mean outdoors or in the open air, most often used for eating and dining outside. Amusingly, in Italy itself the phrase carries a slang meaning closer to "in prison," so Italians usually say "all'aperto" instead. As an art theme, it evokes sunlit terraces, gardens and open-air gatherings.

Is it spelled "al fresco" or "alfresco"?

Both spellings are accepted. Dictionaries list "alfresco" as one word and "al fresco" as two, and you'll see the phrase written either way in menus, travel writing and art titles. The two-word form mirrors the original Italian, while the closed-up form reflects how thoroughly the phrase has settled into English. Either version means the same thing: outdoors, in the open air.
