What are botanical prints called?

Botanical artwork goes by several names depending on how it was made and what it shows. Detailed, scientific-style plant studies are usually called botanical illustrations or florilegia, while decorative plant imagery is often labeled simply botanical art or floral studies. When the image is carved into a block and inked by hand, it's a block print or, if carved into linoleum, a linocut. Reproductions of these designs are sold as botanical art prints.

Is block print going out of style?

No. Block-print botanicals remain a busy area of contemporary craft and design, with new books, courses and working printmakers keeping the look current rather than retro. The style endures because it is simple and graphic: bold shapes, visible carved texture and flat color that reads clearly from across a room. That pared-back quality sits comfortably with modern, rustic, coastal and Scandinavian interiors, so it tends to date slowly.

What are the 7 steps of block printing?

Most block printing follows the same sequence: sketch the plant or design, transfer the drawing onto a lino or wood block, carve away everything that should stay white, roll ink onto the raised surface, lay paper over the block, apply even pressure by hand or with a small press, then lift and dry the print. Extra colors mean carving and printing additional blocks. The technique needs no large press, which is part of its appeal.
