What does the crescent moon symbolize in art?

The crescent moon has long been read as a symbol of cycles, renewal and quiet transformation, since it marks the moon growing toward fullness or fading away. In art it often carries associations with night, dreams, intuition and mystery, which is why it appears so widely in celestial and mystical imagery. As wall decor, that symbolism reads as calm and reflective rather than loud, making crescent designs a popular choice for restful rooms.

What are the two main types of crescent moons?

The two are the waxing crescent and the waning crescent. A waxing crescent appears shortly after the new moon and grows brighter each night, while a waning crescent shrinks as it heads back toward new moon. Artists use both shapes, and the difference simply changes which side of the moon is lit, so the curve tips left or right. If you're pairing two prints, opposing crescents can create a pleasing mirrored balance.
