They are three successive chapters of Japanese woodblock art. Ukiyo-e, or "pictures of the floating world," flourished in the Edo period and showed kabuki actors, beauties, landscapes and famous places, made by a team of designer, carver, printer and publisher. Shin-hanga, from about 1910, kept that team system but added Western light, atmosphere and perspective to soft landscapes and nature scenes. Sosaku-hanga artists broke away, designing, carving and printing themselves, so results look bolder, flatter and more experimental. Each motif carries a traditional wish. Cranes symbolize longevity, peace and good fortune, which is why they turn up in wedding and New Year imagery, while koi stand for perseverance and strength, admired for swimming against the current. Cherry blossoms evoke fleeting beauty and the appreciation of impermanence celebrated every spring. Waves suggest energy, resilience and the rhythm of nature, and the repeating arc pattern known as seigaiha reads as calm seas and unending good luck. The Great Wave is everywhere because it was designed to be: woodblock prints were affordable, mass-produced images sold to Edo-era travelers, and this one, made around 1830-1832, became the breakout star of Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji thanks to its dramatic composition and the newly imported Prussian blue pigment. The series grew to 46 designs showing Fuji across seasons, weather and viewpoints, including Fine Wind, Clear Morning (Red Fuji), Rainstorm Beneath the Summit, and busy scenes of fishermen, carpenters and pilgrims with the peak behind.
