What is the difference between sepia, umber and sanguine browns in art?

They differ by source and undertone. Sepia originally came from cuttlefish ink, giving a soft, translucent dark brown with a violet or grey cast, familiar from old wash drawings and later photographic toning. Umber is a mineral earth coloured by iron and manganese oxides: raw umber is cooler and slightly greenish, while burnt umber, heated to shift the iron, turns warmer and redder. Sanguine is haematite-based red chalk, a blood-warm reddish brown long used for figure studies. For styling, sepia reads antique, umber grounds a room, and sanguine adds warmth.

How do I style brown art prints in a reading nook or home library?

Treat brown art as the anchor tone that ties wooden shelving, leather seating and book spines together. Hang one larger piece at seated eye level behind or beside the chair, or build a small asymmetric cluster on the wall end of a bookcase, mixing sizes and warm wood, brass or matte black frames for a collected look. Keep the palette layered with cream, sage, oxblood or navy accents, then light it low and warm with a table or picture lamp so the tones stay rich rather than heavy.
