What is figurative art?

Figurative art is any art that keeps strong references to the real world, and especially to the human figure. It's often called representational art because you can recognise what's depicted, unlike purely abstract work. In practice that covers a huge range: portraits, figure studies, nudes, minimalist line drawings, fashion illustration and bold, semi-abstract bodies. As a print category, it's one of the most popular ways to bring a human presence into a room.

Who are the best-known figurative artists?

Figurative art runs from the modern masters through to today's painters, with names like Picasso and Warhol regularly cited alongside a wide field of contemporary figurative artists. Contemporary figurative painting has had a strong resurgence, bringing experimental compositions, unusual colour and fresh takes on the body. If you like a particular artist's approach, searching by style, era or palette is usually more productive than searching by name alone.
