Match the subject to how the room is used. Kitchens suit everyday, appetite-friendly imagery: coffee, citrus, herbs, market produce and simple culinary line art, often one confident piece rather than several small ones. Dining rooms handle more formal, atmospheric work such as still lifes, wine and vineyard scenes, or bistro and cafe imagery hung roughly at eye level above a sideboard or table. Home bars and bar carts reward bolder graphics: cocktail illustrations, glassware, whisky and spirit motifs in amber, deep green or black that echo bottles, wood and brass. Where should you hang a canvas print in a kitchen so cooking steam and grease don't reach it?

Hang it outside the cooking zone: aim for at least 60 cm from the hob and around half a metre or so from the sink and any steam-producing appliance, and never directly above a hob where hot air carries grease up the wall. The safest walls are the breakfast nook, the run opposite the worktops, a pantry wall, or the narrow strip beside a doorway. Why did Andy Warhol turn soup cans and everyday food into art?

Andy Warhol painted soup cans and other supermarket staples to erase the line between fine art and mass-produced consumer culture. A former commercial illustrator, he chose an object so ordinary that almost every American recognised it, then repeated it across 32 canvases in 1962, one for each Campbell's variety, first shown lined up like groceries on a shelf. He also said he ate the soup for lunch for roughly 20 years, and he believed art should belong to everyone, not a select few.
