What works on a kitchen wall

Short answers on scale, where to hang, framed or unframed, and pairing still life prints together

Where should you hang still life art in a kitchen so it isn't damaged by steam and cooking grease?

Hang still life art on the walls furthest from the cooking and wet zones: a breakfast nook, banquette, coffee station, pantry wall, or the run beside a doorway. As a rule of thumb, allow roughly 1 metre of clearance from the hob, stay out of the sink's splash line, and skip the wall right above a dishwasher vent, where escaping steam can warp paper and frames. Good extraction and airflow matter too. Centre pieces near 145 to 150 cm, lower over seating, and wipe framed art or canvas occasionally to keep grease haze from building up.

Why do so many kitchen still life prints look Dutch or Flemish, and what did those paintings originally mean?

Because the 17th century Dutch Republic and Flanders essentially invented still life as an independent genre, and their food and tabletop imagery still sets the template that later painters and modern reproductions echo. Wealthy merchants and landowners bought market, larder and banquet scenes to celebrate prosperity and the variety of goods trade brought home. The lavish pronk pictures showed off luxury, while vanitas works used skulls, guttering candles, wilting flowers and peeled lemons as reminders that pleasure and life pass quickly. For today's kitchen, that means warm, dark backgrounds and glowing produce with a quiet moral undertone.
