What's the difference between an abstract portrait, a line-art face and a figurative portrait print?

They differ in how much of the human likeness stays visible. A figurative portrait keeps the person recognisable, using proportion, expression and shading to read as a real individual, even if the handling is loose or stylised. An abstract portrait references a face or body but breaks it into gestural marks, fragmented planes or bold colour, favouring mood over likeness. A line-art face is the most pared back: continuous or minimal contour lines, no shading, high contrast. For styling, line art suits calm minimal rooms, abstract adds drama, and figurative work reads warmer and more classic.

Is it strange to display portraits of people you don't know in your home?

Not at all. Hanging portraits of unfamiliar faces is a long-standing decorating habit, and designers even affectionately call flea-market finds "stranger art." A portrait works as composition, colour and mood rather than a family record, and museums regularly show unidentified sitters whose clothing, gesture and setting still tell a story. Modern and abstract portraiture goes further by loosening exact likeness, leaving room for your own interpretation. Choose a face whose expression and palette suit the room, treat it like any other focal artwork, and it will read as intentional, not odd.
