What is the overlapping technique in art?

Overlapping is when one shape or form is placed partly in front of another, so the covered form reads as farther away. Artists use it to build depth on a flat surface and to create push-and-pull between foreground, middle ground and background. In abstract work, overlapping circles, arcs and rectangles also generate new colours and edges where the forms cross, which is what gives these prints their layered, dimensional feel.

What is layered art called?

Layered art goes by several names depending on how the layers are made. Painted or printed compositions that stack translucent or solid shapes are usually just described as layered or overlapping abstraction, and cut-and-pasted layers are collage. Prints that pile up geometric forms in a mid-century or cubist-influenced style sit in that overlapping-abstraction family, where the crossings between shapes become part of the design.

Where do overlapping forms prints work best in a home?

They suit rooms where you want a calm focal point rather than a busy scene: living rooms, studies, bedrooms, hallways and dining areas all work well. Because the composition is simple and graphic, a single large print reads well above a sofa or bed, while two or three smaller ones can be lined up along a corridor. Try echoing one hue from the print in a cushion or vase to tie the wall into the room.

Should I choose a framed or unframed overlapping forms print?

Choose framed if you want the piece finished and ready to hang straight out of the box, with no assembly needed. Unframed is the flexible option if you already own frames or want to match existing mouldings and mats for a custom look. Framed canvas arrives as one finished product, so no separate frame is shipped. Delivery is free and returns are accepted within 99 days, so it's easy to try a format at home.
