What does "painterly" mean in a cliff art print?

Painterly describes artwork where the brushwork stays visible instead of being smoothed away, so you can read the strokes, texture and loose edges in the surface. In coastal cliff scenes that softens the headlands, sea and sky into blended colour rather than sharp photographic detail. Reproductions capture that stroke texture visually, giving a print the warmth of an oil or gouache study on a wall.

Which artists are associated with painterly cliff paintings?

Claude Monet is the name most people search for, thanks to his 1882 coastal works around Normandy including Cliff Walk at Pourville, the Cliffs at Varengeville and rough-sea studies at Pourville. These Impressionist scenes are known for their loose, visible painterly surface. Other Impressionist and Post-Impressionist landscape painters worked similar coastal subjects, and the style continues in contemporary painterly seascapes.
