How do I choose the right portrait art print for my living room?

Start with scale. A single large portrait print (60x80cm or bigger) above a sofa or sideboard anchors the room and gives it real presence. For living rooms, we think contemporary portrait art prints in muted, earthy tones or classic black and white work best because they add personality without clashing with your existing palette. If your room already feels busy with pattern or colour, a monochrome portrait is your safest bet. If it feels flat and neutral, a portrait with warm skin tones or a bold background will bring the life it's missing.

Should I go for portrait or landscape orientation for wall art?

Portrait orientation draws the eye upward, making ceilings feel taller and narrow walls feel more intentional. If you're filling a space above a tall piece of furniture like a bookcase or console table, portrait is almost always the better call. Landscape works best above wider furniture like sofas and beds. For people portrait prints specifically, the vertical format tends to feel more natural and gallery-like because it mirrors how we see each other in real life.

How do I display portrait prints without it looking cluttered or tacky?

The golden rule: less is more, and framing quality matters enormously. A single beautifully framed portrait print will always look better than five cheap ones crammed together. If you want a gallery arrangement, stick to the same frame finish across all pieces and leave at least 5cm between each frame. Our portrait art prints arrive ready to hang in solid wood frames with UV-protective glazing, so you skip the whole frustrating process of buying frames separately and hoping they fit. Hang the centre of your print at roughly 145cm from the floor (the 57-inch rule) and you'll nail it first time.

Do black and white portrait prints work in a colourful room?

They absolutely do, and we'd argue they work even better there than in a neutral space. A black and white portrait print acts as a visual anchor point, giving a colourful room something calm and grounding to balance against. In a room with jewel-toned walls or bold textiles, a large-format monochrome portrait in a black or natural wood frame creates contrast that feels deliberate and curated. It stops things from tipping into chaotic territory. Our giclée printing on thick matte paper gives black and white images incredible tonal depth, so you get true blacks and soft, detailed greys rather than washed-out grey mush.

What are the different types of portrait art?

Broadly, portrait art falls into four categories: classical portraiture (think formal compositions and painterly detail), photographic portraits (capturing real people with a camera, often editorial or documentary in style), figurative or abstract portraits (where faces and forms are stylised, fragmented, or reimagined), and illustrative portraits (graphic, often bold line work or pop-art influenced). Our people portrait art prints span all of these styles, from intimate black and white photography to expressive painted figures. If you're drawn to something specific, filtering by style can help you zero in quickly.
