New synthetic pigments made it possible: he worked with three shades of chrome yellow, from pale lemon to a deep yellow-orange, layered thickly. His best-known yellow works include the Sunflowers series, Wheatfield with a Reaper, The Yellow House and Cafe Terrace at Night. Chrome yellow darkens with light exposure, so those paintings were once even more brilliant.
