What makes a garden scene look Art Nouveau rather than just botanical?

An Art Nouveau garden scene is defined by treatment, not subject: plants are stylised into ornament rather than recorded accurately. Look for the sinuous whiplash curve, an S-shaped line that swells and tapers like a vine or tendril, plus asymmetric composition, strong contour lines, flat pooled colour and decorative borders that frame the scene. Botanical illustration aims for scientific accuracy with isolated specimens on plain grounds; Art Nouveau flattens depth, exaggerates growth and turns irises, lilies, poppies and wisteria into rhythmic pattern. Dragonflies, peacocks and flowing hair often join the design.

Which Art Nouveau artists are best known for garden and plant imagery?

Alphonse Mucha and Eugene Grasset are the two names most tied to garden and plant imagery in Art Nouveau. Mucha's 1898 Flowers panels personify rose, iris, carnation, and lily as women framed by blossoms, part of the decorative panel format he made famous. Grasset directed La Plante et ses applications ornementales (1896), whose colour plates pair botanical studies with stylised ornament; Maurice Pillard Verneuil drew most of them and later built his own plant and nature pattern work. Charles Rennie Mackintosh's flower studies and Emile Galle's botanical glass motifs round out the group.
