Why do cats appear in so many famous paintings, and which classics feature them?

Cats recur in painting because artists prized their symbolism and their studio company: felines could suggest domestic warmth, independence, mystery, sensuality or superstition, and they were always close at hand. Classic examples include Manet's Olympia with its black cat, Steinlen's Le Chat Noir poster, Renoir's girl-with-cat portraits, Kuniyoshi's ukiyo-e cat prints, Louis Wain's comic feline scenes, Franz Marc's boldly coloured cats and Picasso's Cat Catching a Bird. Leonardo's rapid cat studies and a claw-sharpening cat in Veronese's Wedding at Cana show the habit stretches back centuries. Playful modern remixes that insert cats into masterpieces keep the tradition trending.

Why are hummingbirds such a popular art subject, and what makes vintage hummingbird illustrations look so jewel-like?

Hummingbirds have fascinated artists since Victorian naturalists first documented them, because their tiny bodies carry some of the most intense colour in the bird world, paired with flowers and a sense of suspended motion that suits decorative art. That shimmer is structural, not pigment: stacked, air-filled melanin platelets in the feather barbules bounce light back as pure, angle-shifting colour. Nineteenth-century printmakers chased the effect on paper by laying gold leaf or metallic underlayers beneath hand-applied transparent colours and varnish, which is why antique plates read as glowing and gem-like rather than flat.
