What is the ink wash technique?

Ink wash is a brush technique that sits between drawing and painting: black ink is diluted with water into washes of varying strength, then layered to build tone rather than line. It grew out of Chinese brush painting and the calligraphic tradition, and is also known in Japan as sumi-e. The look is defined by soft gradients, open negative space and a few confident strokes, which is why reproductions of it read as calm and minimal on a wall.

How should I clean an ink wash canvas print?

Dust it dry first with a soft, clean microfibre cloth, working gently from the top down. If marks remain, barely dampen the cloth with water, wring it out well and wipe lightly, keeping moisture to a minimum. For stubborn grime a drop of mild detergent can help, but test in an inconspicuous corner first. Never soak the surface, scrub, or use solvents or household sprays.

Do ink wash prints have to be black and white?

No. The classic tradition works in diluted black ink, giving the familiar monochrome greys that suit neutral, pared-back rooms. But the same wash technique is widely used with coloured inks, producing soft blues, sepias or warmer tinted washes that keep the loose, flowing character while adding a hint of hue. If your room already has strong colour, monochrome washes calm things down; in an all-neutral space, a tinted wash adds quiet interest.
