What makes an artwork read as a "playful illustration" rather than just colourful abstract art?
Playful illustration reads as illustration because you can still recognise what is drawn. It keeps a visible drawing hand: outlines or sketchy line work, simplified flat shapes, exaggerated or slightly off proportions, and a recognisable subject such as a creature, figure, plant or scene that suggests a small story or joke. Purely abstract art drops that subject and lets colour, shape and texture carry mood alone. Bright colour helps, but tone and drawn form decide it.
