What makes an artwork read as a "playful illustration" rather than just colourful abstract art?
Playful illustration reads as illustration because you can still recognise what is drawn. It keeps a visible drawing hand: outlines or sketchy line work, simplified flat shapes, exaggerated or slightly off proportions, and a recognisable subject such as a creature, figure, plant or scene that suggests a small story or joke. Purely abstract art drops that subject and lets colour, shape and texture carry mood alone. Bright colour helps, but tone and drawn form decide it. When choosing prints, look for that friendly, light-hearted, storybook feel over open-ended shapes.
How do you style playful illustrated art in a grown-up living room without it looking childish?
Treat the illustration as the room's one moment of humour and let everything around it stay adult. Hang a single larger piece at eye level over a sofa or console rather than scattering small cartoons, and choose a slim, restrained frame in black, natural wood or white so the presentation reads gallery, not playroom. Pull one or two colours from the artwork into cushions or ceramics for cohesion, keep the surrounding palette calm and grown-up, and mix in mature textures like linen, brass and aged wood. Designers currently call this sophisticated whimsy: playful subject, disciplined styling.
