Buying a sofa print: what to know

Short answers on framing choices, hanging art above seating, and how your order turns up

What size art should hang above a sofa?

A common designer guideline is to make your artwork roughly two-thirds of the sofa's width, or somewhere between 60 and 75 per cent. For a 90-inch sofa, that points to a piece or arrangement around 140 to 165 cm wide (about 1.4 to 1.65 m). If a single print isn't wide enough, group two or three together and count the total span, including the gaps, as your width. Taping the outline on the wall first helps you judge the scale before committing.

What is the 2/3 rule for couches?

The 2/3 rule is a quick proportion trick: whatever hangs above the couch should measure about two-thirds of the sofa's width so the wall doesn't look bare or overcrowded. A 200 cm (about 2 m) sofa suits art around 120 to 150 cm wide. The same logic applies to a gallery wall, where the combined width of the frames stands in for one large piece. It's a starting point rather than a strict law, so trust your eye in unusual rooms.

What are the current trends in living room art?

Oversized statement pieces are dominating living rooms right now, with one extra-large print doing the work that a cluster of small frames used to. Calm abstracts, organic shapes and soft natural palettes remain popular behind the sofa, while retro and mid-century-inspired graphics bring in bolder colour. Multi-panel sets are another favourite for wide walls. Choose whichever direction echoes the tones already in your upholstery and rug so the art feels intentional.

How do I choose between a single large print and a set of prints above the sofa?

One large print gives a calm, uncluttered focal point and suits modern or minimal rooms where you want the sofa and art to read as a single block. A set of two or three works better on very wide walls, or when you want to mix subjects and colours while still filling the space. Either way, keep the total width near two-thirds of the sofa and hang the pieces at a consistent height.
