    Somewhere between Matisse and loose Fauvist sketching, this Paris cityscape refuses to behave. The towers of Notre Dame go up in a few quick strokes; the river runs through in green and yellow streaks; the sky is a smudge of lilac and grey.

    Put it on a wall and the room slows down. The colours are soft enough to live with, but the brushwork has bite — it gives a calm room something to look at without shouting.

    Are Fab canvas prints good quality?

    How do I know what size will actually work in my space?

    Here's the rule of thumb: your canvas should take up about 2/3 to 3/4 of the width of your furniture (like a sofa or bed). So if your couch is 180cm, you want something around 100-120cm wide.

    Too small of a canvas looks lost on the wall. Too big overwhelms the room. If you're between sizes, go bigger it's almost always better to have impact than to have something that disappears.

    Is this piece more muted than typical Matisse?

    Yes. This is one of his 1914 Notre Dame views, painted in the early years of the First World War. The palette is softer and the brushwork looser than his bold Fauvist work — closer in feel to a tinted sketch than a saturated canvas. That makes it much easier to live with in a neutral room.

    Will it work in a small room with off-white walls?

    Very well. The lilac sky and warm sand tones actually need a calm wall to read properly. A chalky off-white or warm cream plaster wall lets the brushwork breathe. In a small room, go with a medium size at eye level rather than oversizing it — the looseness rewards being seen from a comfortable distance.

    Does it read clearly as Notre Dame, or is it quite abstract?

    The twin towers and rose window are unmistakable, but they're sketched in quick strokes rather than drawn in detail. From across a room it reads as a Paris cityscape with the cathedral as anchor; up close, you see the looseness and the bare patches where the canvas shows through. It sits between recognisable and painterly.
