Choosing line art: your questions

Short answers on framing choices, where line drawings work best, and how to pair them on a wall

What is line art, and why does it work so well in black and white?

Line art builds an image from outlines and contours rather than shading or blocks of colour, so the drawing itself carries all the interest. Stripped down to black ink on a pale ground, the result reads as graphic and calm at the same time, which is why it suits minimalist and Scandinavian-leaning rooms. It also keeps a wall feeling light, since there's plenty of open space between the strokes.

Should I choose an art print or a canvas for line art?

Paper art prints show crisp ink lines and pair nicely with a frame and a border of mat-like space, which suits delicate, detailed drawings. Canvas gives a softer, more textural surface and a frameless look that works well for bold, sparse strokes. Both come framed or unframed depending on the piece, and a framed canvas arrives as one finished product with nothing to assemble.
