Who was Kamisaka Sekka?

Kamisaka Sekka (1866–1942) was an important artistic figure in early twentieth-century Japan. Born in Kyoto to a samurai family, he trained in painting under a Shijo school teacher before becoming a leading modern voice in the Rinpa tradition. He is best known for combining historical Japanese themes with strikingly modern, graphic design, work that still feels contemporary on a wall today.

What makes Sekka's designs recognisable?

Sekka worked with Rinpa techniques and subjects: flat planes of colour, bold simplified shapes, and decorative use of mica, gold and silver leaf. His woodblock designs often feature classical, innovative and floral motifs, along with birds, water and seasonal scenes rendered with very little shading. That poster-like flatness is why reproductions read so cleanly from across a room.
