Who was John Gould?

John Gould (1804-1881) was a British ornithologist, artist and publisher who became one of the nineteenth century's most celebrated bird illustrators. He captured his subjects with quick, bold lines, and his teams produced close to 3,000 hand-coloured plates over his career. His bird studies remain popular as decorative wall art because the plates combine scientific accuracy with striking colour and elegant composition.

What is John Gould's most famous work?

Gould is best remembered for large folio volumes of colour-plate bird illustrations, with The Birds of Australia among his most famous. It is still regarded as one of the most comprehensive works on Australian ornithology. His monograph on hummingbirds, published in England between 1849 and 1861, is another highlight, and parrots and other exotic birds from these publications are among the most reproduced images today.

How do you style vintage parrot prints in a room?

Tropical bird studies work beautifully against a calm backdrop, so try a warm white, soft sage or deep teal wall to let the plumage carry the colour. A row of two or three prints in matching frames reads as a classic natural-history display above a sofa, sideboard or bed. Dark wood or black frames lean traditional, while slim natural wood feels lighter and more contemporary.
